Mimobot: Vinyl toys with a digital soul.

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

I am a nerd.

Lemme say that again.

I AM A NERD!

And for those who don’t know, when one is a proud and dedicated individual to the geek lifestyle, there are certain attributes that bless and curse them. One is an appreciation for art, of many or any medium. Another – the desire to purchase and collect items (toys, art, books, DVDs, etc) to an almost obsessive degree. It was these two attributes, dare I say ‘skills’, that brought my attention to the booming vinyl/designer toy market several years ago. Until recently, in which I moved to New York three months ago, my collection of designer toy series had adorned every corner of my room, but since my move I came to the realization that I cannot keep spending money on toys, collectibles and non-functioning items, which is something that breaks my heart. That was until I was introduced to a company at this year’s New York Comic Con called Mimobot whose business model is to create designer USB flash drives – and I gotta say, they are doing it right.
Created in 2005, this Boston based company has been making a storm on the market amongst technophiles, designer toy collectors and the overall geek culture. With a variety of different series from Star Wars, Hello Kitty, and Happy Tree Friends to artist originals, I cannot think of a better way or company to make my computer look cooler. With flash drives that start at 2gb and run up to 16gb, there is something for everyone and all their storage needs.
If you’re yet to be sold on this company’s innovative take on designer toys and the digital market, I met with Mimobot representative Jessica Smiley whose sincere tag line of the company’s purpose was a perfect summary. She said that the company “takes the hollow vinyl toys and give them a digital soul.” I found that to be rather poetic and all “futury” statement regardless.

If having the coolest looking flash drive isn’t enough, Mimobot created more features that further set their product aside from the flash drive, and designer toy, market further. Each drive comes pre-loaded with erasable content that includes:

- programmed sounds that activate upon docking and un-docking of the drive that are specific to the drives characters. (I will say I am not sure if this is specific only to the Star Wars series, which I became the proud owner of, or all the drives sold). Nonetheless, when I dock my Darth Vader drive in my ears drum with a series of sounds that play – all of which “drive” me to spend several more minutes plugging the drive in-and-out of my computer.

- A variety of screen savers and desktop images (from my experience related to my Mimobot and the series it belongs to).

- The Mimo-zine which includes artist interviews, news and more about the company and industry.

Lastly, while remaining in the true spirit of designer toys they offer special and rare versions to some of the series. Originally at the booth I planned to acquire the Star Wars Wampa flash drive, but after rep. Jessica told me that one of six Darth Vader drives have the scared face of the classic series. I had to take my chances. It didn’t work to my favor (but, it still remains to be radical).
Aside from the various licensed crossover series, Mimobot also offers some very amazing bots by famed, and new, designer toy artists that continue the imaginative and creative spirit that designer toys are predicated on.

In the end, I am a person that is always on my computer, is always in need to transfer and move data and I have found my preferred mode of data transportation – Mimobot.

Maritime Fun at the Frying Pan

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

About a week ago I heard a rumor running about the pub as I sipped from another pint of grog, that thar be a place where one can drink a’bucket of Coronas on a tug-boat with ye mateys.
We be warned that we would have a grand ol’ time. So this past Sunday, I gathered a motley crew, with no furner of our own, and ventured into Chelsea to find this mysterious ship. And by the powers!, Kelley, Rebecca and me-self had found it. A large tug-boat that was unoccupied and for the takin’.

Pirate-talk aside, we all recently went to The Frying Pan, located at Pier 66 on 12th Ave & 26th St, which is a large tug boat that is open for exploration while you eat and drink with your friends, families or foes. The skies were over cast, the seas were a bit rough. No matter the conditions, we were going to be on the boat. With my aforementioned party members, we were going under the assumption (that we heard word of mouth from a third party) that the beers were really cheap. Sadly, when we made our way to the bar located on the pier, we saw a sign informing us that the ‘bucket of Corona’ was $35 – far more then we were prepared to spend. Filled with disappointment, we didn’t travel all of this way just to turn back around, so I bit the bullet and bought a single beer (at the price of $7). We begrudgingly brought ourselves aboard the boat and sat for a moment as large cruise ships went down on the Hudson river. Moments later we rallied up our spirits and began our tour and exploration of this large and empty boat. With three different stories to explore (four if you count the deck above the ship’s helm) we began our descent into the gut. With several rooms, closets and passage ways on each floor, the adventurer inside me started to open everything possible that I could or wasn’t supposed to…

That is when it happened – I was forced to make a choice; be the pirate I was always meant to be or remain a weak-kneed ‘landlubber’. It was when I saw a closet door that was unlocked, I opened it and found several cases of booty, liquid gold bottled and sealed as ‘Corona’. So, now that we chose the path of pirates, we plundered the ship and took to the stern to relax and revel in our findings. Soon after Ethan James, known for his vigorous swashbucklin’, took to arms with our crew of dangerous lass’ and me. The boat swayed back and forth and we raised our bottles to the spirits that be of the high seas.

[editor's note: we did nothing wrong in this situation. We are unsure about the maritime laws regarding our findings - you would have done the same thing, jerk]

Now that we were feelin’ merry, we returned to further explore the boat and show Ethan the nooks and crannies of the retired tug-boat. There was even one moment when I had forged our way through to a storage area that was pitch black, but I entered anyway and had Ethan use the power of technology and the camera flash to illuminate the cold and dark room.

the stern mystery room

I also had the joy of scaring Rebecca in which she screamed (and she rarely does that).

All in all, if you live in New York or are planning a visit to the big apple, The Frying Pan is a guaranteed good time. With or without our lucky findings, it is a fun and relaxing destination. While the beer might be a little expensive, their food (fries, hot dogs, etc) are well priced and delicious. So strap on your sea-legs and venture forth to the piers of the Hudson river.

Ask Daedalus

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Q: How Does it work?

A: The Daedalus Machine is an amalgam of both low and high-fidelity rheostat receivers harnessed with a psychovoltaic array. Your questions, queries and difficult circumstances will be put through a battery of paranormal, quasi-intelligible and metaphysical channels until a solution is revealed, the specifics of which transcend Newtonian thought and use panoscopic theorology as a vital conduit. This sophisticated process, powered primarily by the ideomotor effect, calls upon all manner of mediums in an attempt to attain partial omniscience. From there we sorta wing it and give you an answer.

Q: What is the best way to fend off possible homosexual advances from a co-worker whose sexuality is in dispute? Obviously, if the gentleman in question is not gay, I don’t want to offend him by implying something, but the way he mashes his genitals against the glass dishware at the restaurant we both work at is making me anxious and uncomfortable.

A: Greek fire.
