Helicopters!

September 22nd, 2010

I got up pretty early on a Sunday to go explore the city. I thought it would be fun to go check out Ground Zero real early in the morning when there were no tourists or anyone around. It was fairly deserted apart from a bunch of joggers, some cops, and some people washing their dogs. I wasn’t aware people even lived in the Financial District, but apparently there are enough of them (and they pay enough rent) for the city to install bone-shaped doggy bathtubs in the little tiny parks that they fence off next to the road. Anyway, I guess I was expecting some stark & thought-provoking mound of rubble or something, but it looked like this:

I soldiered on, past Battery Park, past the True Religion jeans store on Wall Street (?), past a hilarious bus, until finally:

Wait a minute, that's just the Loch Ness monster.

No it’s not the Loch Ness monster! It’s a freaking helicopter taking off from the southern tip of Manhattan! There’s a whole bunch of them!

Well, just 2 right now.

I watched them for what can only be described as “too long”. I took this video, which was quite difficult since the heliport was about 150 yards away.

Anyway, yeah, that was pretty neat.
